Motorcyclist contributor Ken Condon is getting familiar with the Triumph press corps after attending the Speed Triple launch for us earlier in the year (click here to read Ken’s review of the 2016 Speed Triple) and now learning more about the updated 2016 Explorer adventure-touring motorcycle.

Ken’s in Portugal right now, presumably getting wined and dined by Triumph, but let’s highlight some of the changes to the 2016 model.

Not just one but six models, actually. Where Triumph had the Explorer and slightly butched-up XC versions last year, now there’s three of each, with the XR being street biased and the XC being more off-roady. Cast wheels for the XR, tubeless spoke wheels for the XC.

All models get an uprated triple with “more power and torque” than before. Base models (XR and XC) get manually adjustable WP suspension, but the four higher-spec Explorers will get a version of WP’s semi-active suspension, which debuted on industry rival’s KTM 1290 Super Adventure last year.

All have ride by wire with standard cruise control, but the four up-spec versions get an Inertial Measurement Unit to provide lean-angle-informed ABS and traction control, bringing Triumph right to the cutting edge of the class. All six variants have basic ride modes at least. From the Rain and Road modes on the XR and XC models you can add the Off Road mode in the XRx and XCx versions, while to that you can add both Sport and Rider (customizable) modes in the high-line XRt and XCa. Tire-pressure monitoring and taller windscreens are also standard on the top-run bikes.

That’s what we know for sure. By the end of the launch we’ll know how these updated Tiger Explorers work and what they’ll cost here in the US.
